2018 HIGH SPEED RAIL COMPARISON BETWEEN TURKEY AND EUROPEAN COUNTRIES IN TERMS OF NETWORK, OPERATION AND INVESTMENTS

High speed rail (HSR) is a complex and interdisciplinary system that concerns many technical aspects, such as infrastructure, rolling stock and operations, as well as strategic and cross-sector issues covering human factors, financial, commercial and managerial elements. Since HSR systems are developing all around the World, amount of investments on this sector is increasing day by day. To be able to cope with the needs of intercity passengers enhancing the current transportation system, which is road dominant today, Turkey has been investing in HSR system as a competitive mode since 2009. 10 European countries other than Turkey provide HSR services inside their national borders today. These countries were compared in terms of total railway network length, HSR network length, investments and operational aspects of railways. As a result of the analyses, the situation of Turkey in this field was evaluated and some recommendations were made on development of the sector.
